KU introduces Intellectual Property education in the curriculum – leads to create awareness about the
rights of students as creators & innovators

Ahmedabad, April 29: New record was created at the Karnavati University (KU), Gandhinagar, Gujarat when 295 students successfully filed the application in one single day for the Intellectual Property certification. This move has subsequently entered their attempt into the prestigious Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records, for record number of Intellectual Property filing.
The felicitation ceremony was held on Saturday at the University’s sprawling campus, to commemorate the students’ achievement for filing a record 151 design applications and 144 copyright applications – a record till date achieved by a university in a single day.
Karnavati University is a state private university dedicated to excellence in teaching and focused on interdisciplinary learning.
Karnavati University has created the record in Asia Book of Records (ABR) and India Book of Records (IBR) on 26 April, 2023 by applying for 295 Intellectual Property Protection Application with the Indian Patent Office. Adjudicators of the Asia Book of Records as well as the India Book of Records – Dr Samir Das and Neelima Chhajed visited the University campus for the felicitation ceremony. Ritesh Hada, president, Karnavati University also remained present at the event.
The design and copyright applications have been received from various departments of UID including the department of product design along with fashion design, lifestyle accessories, visual communications Automobile and Transport Design (ATD), Integrated Masters Design (IMD) and Interior Design, by students and faculties of UID at Karnavati University.
Amit Patel, from PATectual IP Law Services LLP is the intellectual property (IP) consultant who helped the students file the IP applications for their innovations. After the attempt at the record was successful, adjudicators from New Delhi and Ahmedabad were appointed to felicitate the students with the certificates of record.
Speaking on the occasion, Ritesh Hada, president, Karnavati University, said, “At Karnavati University, it is our constant endeavour to create platforms for innovation and letting the youngsters take creative strides in design. Shaping young design professionals to be able to use their academic knowhow into innovations that can help address real-world concerns is our motto. I take immense pride in yet another feat that our students have achieved by innovating and getting rewarded for their innovations in various fields of design. It indeed bears testimony to the holistic approach to design education adopted and practiced at Karnavati University, year after year, and strengthens our commitment towards it.”
Providing more details about the illustrious attempt Ridhima Sharma, Head Legal and International Affairs KU said “It was the vision of our president Ritesh Hada to introduce Intellectual Property education in the curriculum of Design students at the KU. Subsequently we at KU believe in creativity and innovation and hence our students’ creations needed to be protected. We undertook workshops and launched campaigns and created awareness among the students at the campus.”
“Since the 2023 World Intellectual Property Day theme is focused on Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity, we at KU under Hada Sir’s guidance decided to make it big for our uni students. 80 percent of the IP filings that has been made are from girl students. We, at KU have over 60 percent of students and faculty both comprising of females” added Ridhima.
Col Surojit Bose, Director Unitedworld Institute of Design (UID, KU) said “It is a red letter day of the KU today when our students set a new record. This was made possible with the help and support of our faculty members.”
Sandip Takwani of the KIIF seeded the idea of the IP acquisition for students’ achievement an idea and dream of KU President Ritesh Hada. Priyanshi Gupta co-ordinated the entire exercise of the record setting IP filing by the students of the KU. Tariq Ali Syed, Registrar of KU also wished the students a brilliant future ahead.
KU has helped the students both in arranging funding and utilisation of resources for their creative projects. Most of the IP filings comprised of students of designing (product and lifestyle segments) and liberal arts.
