Mahesh Pandya: The Engineer-Turned-Activist Giving Voice to Gujarat’s Environment and Its People

Mahesh Pandya: Gujarat’s Green Crusader Turning Public Hearings into People’s Power

Mahesh Pandya: The Engineer Who Engineered Gujarat’s Environmental Awakening

Ahmedabad, June 24: In a world often clouded by industrial ambition and political silence, Mahesh Pandya emerges as a resolute voice for the environment and the rights of people whose lives intertwine with the land they call home.

As the Director and Editor of Paryavaran Mitra, a Gujarat-based environmental organization, Pandya has spent over three decades not just studying environmental degradation—but challenging it, questioning it, and standing firmly against it.

What sets Pandya apart is not just his deep understanding of environmental laws, but his ability to translate that knowledge into real impact. Whether it’s standing shoulder to shoulder with villagers during public hearings or taking policy matters to court, his work is guided by a single principle: people have the right to be heard when it comes to the land they live on and the air they breathe.

Academic Roots, Activist Routes

Mahesh Pandya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from L.D. College of Engineering in Ahmedabad, a foundation that has helped him bridge the gap between technical expertise and grassroots activism. This engineering background has become a powerful tool in his environmental advocacy, allowing him to critically analyse and challenge Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports and infrastructure projects.

Turning Hearings into Hope

Public hearings—an often overlooked mechanism for voicing environmental concerns—has become Pandya’s battleground and classroom. With over 200 environmental public hearings under his belt, he has not only represented countless marginalized communities but also educated them about their rights. He believes in turning the intimidating language of EIA reports into something understandable and actionable for everyday citizens.

“Public hearings are not just a formality,” Pandya asserts. “They are an opportunity—sometimes the only opportunity—for local people to demand accountability.”

His efforts led to procedural improvements in Gujarat’s public hearing processes, including better transparency, accessibility, and quality in EIA reporting. His advocacy also contributed to amending Gujarat’s RTI rules through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), expanding access to crucial environmental information.

Leading with Purpose at Paryavaran Mitra

As Director of Paryavaran Mitra, Pandya leads initiatives that focus on environmental awareness, policy intervention, and strengthening democratic governance. The organization works across sectors, promoting environmental education, raising awareness, and engaging youth and other stakeholders in environmental protection.

Paryavaran Mitra’s work is not confined to local or national issues—it holds observer status with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has participated in global environmental discussions. Through this, Pandya ensures that voices from Gujarat are part of the international climate dialogue.

He also serves as Editor of a bi-monthly newsletter that demystifies environmental law for the general public and acts as a valuable resource for media professionals reporting on environmental issues.

Advocacy Rooted in Community

What perhaps defines Mahesh Pandya the most is his respect for community wisdom. He believes that the people most affected by environmental decisions should be the first ones consulted. His advocacy spans wetland conservation, hazardous waste management, and climate policy, often pushing back against unchecked industrial growth at the cost of ecological health.

His role as Director on the Board of Trustees of Paryavaran Mitra—alongside President Vijay Parmar and trustees Alka Palrecha Rawal, Pankajbhai Buch, and Persis Ginwala—provides strategic oversight to the organization, ensuring that grassroots concerns influence top-level decisions.

Recognition and the Road Ahead

For his unwavering dedication, Pandya was honored with the Greenpreneur Award, a testament to his lifelong commitment to sustainability and justice. Yet, his mission has never been about accolades—it’s about empowering people and restoring balance between progress and preservation.

In Gujarat’s complex environmental landscape, where economic growth often clashes with ecological sustainability, Mahesh Pandya stands as a green conscience. His vision is not only for cleaner air and greener spaces but for an informed, empowered, and participative society.

For anyone wondering whether one person can truly make a difference—Mahesh Pandya is the answer. And his journey continues, one public hearing, one community, and one policy at a time.
