The heart of Gir beats a little quieter today. With the passing of Jay, barely a month after his inseparable companion Veeru, the legendary lion duo of Gir — affectionately named after Bollywood’s iconic “Sholay” pair — have departed, leaving behind a trail of awe, affection, and unforgettable roars.
Both Jay and Veeru succumbed to injuries despite tireless efforts by the Government of Gujarat’s forest department and expert veterinarians. A dedicated team from Vantara also camped in Gir for two days, trying every possible intervention to save Jay. But fate, it seems, had other plans.
“Deeply anguished by the passing away of Jay today,” mourned Parimal Nathwani. “After a long and valiant battle, Jay too departed. For every wildlife enthusiast who has witnessed their majestic presence or heard tales of their legendary bond — this loss feels deeply personal. Even Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had the fortune of seeing them during his recent Gir visit. Gir will never be the same without them. Legends may fade, but their spirit will echo through the forests they once ruled.”
In the dense, sun-dappled expanse of Gir, Jay and Veeru were more than just lions — they were a story. Their camaraderie was the stuff of folklore, akin to their film namesakes. From Malanka to Limadra, their shared journeys were marked by adventure, raw power, and above all, unwavering loyalty.
Though fierce and sometimes playful in their territorial tussles, Jay & Veeru’s bond remained unbreakable. Their deep roars often felt like an anthem of friendship —
“ये दोस्ती हम नहीं तोड़ेंगे…” —
a melodic echo that still reverberates through the land they once ruled together.
Locals often said, “गिर में जय-वीरु को नहीं देखा तो कुछ नहीं देखा” — to visit Gir and miss this duo was to miss its very soul.
Jay & Veeru now join the ranks of Gir’s timeless legends, like Dharam-Veer before them. Their story reminds us that the jungle has its heroes too — not just fierce, but full of heart.
As the sun sets over Gir, a chapter closes — but their legacy roars on.
