The All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) commemorated a landmark moment in India’s digital journey by celebrating “3 Decades of Mobile Industry” in Kolkata. The event marked 30 years since the country’s first mobile call—made on July 31, 1995, by then West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to Telecom Minister Sukh Ram using a Nokia handset on the Modi Telstra network.
To honor this historic milestone, a Special Commemorative Postal Stamp was unveiled at The Almond, Kolkata. The ceremony was graced by dignitaries including Shri Ashok Kumar, Chief Post Master General of the West Bengal Circle; . Kailash Lakhyani, National Founder Chairman, AIMRA; Navneet Pathak, National Joint Secretary, AIMRA; Mohan Bajoria, State President, AIMRA Bengal; and Mridul Biswas, State General Secretary, AIMRA Bengal, along with several other industry leaders.
The celebration ehoed the theme “Bengal Means Business,” highlighting Bengal’s entrepreneurial spirit and vital role in India’s mobile revolution. Over 200 AIMRA leaders from across the country gathered to honor mobile retailers—the “end-mile” contributors who have connected technology to consumers for three decades through personal support, service, and trust.
Reflecting on the occasion, Kailash Lakhyani said, “This celebration isn’t just about technological milestones; it’s a tribute to the lakhs of retailers who’ve shaped India’s digital transformation. From voice calls in 1995 to today’s high-speed networks, mobile retailers have consistently empowered consumers with innovation.”
Adding to this, Mohan Bajoria remarked, “It’s a proud moment for Bengal and AIMRA. This commemorative stamp symbolizes the lasting legacy and impact of mobile telephony in India’s growth story.”
The event stands as a tribute not just to three decades of communication breakthroughs but to the enduring commitment of India’s mobile retail community that continues to fuel the nation’s digital progress.
