Air India to Halt Delhi–Washington, D.C. Flights from September 1

Fleet retrofits and airspace closure cited as key reasons; alternative travel options offered

BILKULONLINE

Gurugram, August 11: Air India has announced that it will suspend its non-stop services between Delhi and Washington, D.C., effective September 1, 2025, citing operational challenges and a need to maintain network integrity.

Reasons Behind the Suspension

The airline said the move is driven primarily by a planned shortfall in its fleet. Last month, Air India began retrofitting 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft as part of an extensive upgrade programme to enhance passenger experience. This retrofit process will keep several aircraft grounded at any given time until at least the end of 2026.

Compounding the challenge, the continued closure of Pakistani airspace has forced longer flight routes for long-haul operations, adding to operational complexity and cost.

Options for Affected Passengers

Passengers holding bookings to or from Washington, D.C. after September 1 will be contacted directly and given the choice of:

Air India noted that customers can still reach Washington, D.C. via one-stop connections through its U.S. gateways—New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco—using interline partners Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. These partnerships will allow passengers to travel on a single itinerary with through-checked baggage.

Continuing North American Operations

Despite the suspension, Air India will continue to operate non-stop flights between India and six North American destinations, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.

Founded in 1932 by JRD Tata, Air India returned to Tata Sons in 2022 after 70 years of government ownership. The airline group, which also includes Air India Express, is undergoing a five-year transformation plan, Vihaan.AI, involving the induction of 570 new aircraft, cabin upgrades, expanded training facilities, and the construction of a new maintenance base.
