Vivek Desai, who began his journey into photography back in 1992, fondly recalls a time when owning a good camera was a rare luxury and capturing moments was a privilege enjoyed by few. Through his lens, he has sought to preserve the essence of an older Ahmedabad — its timeless pols, narrow lanes, and everyday beauty — as well as the soulful spirit of Varanasi, a city he has visited countless times to capture its ancient ghats and living traditions. His work is not just about images but about memories, stories, and the emotions of places that continue to breathe through his photographs.

Renowned photographer Vivek Desai has brought the timeless charm of film photography back into focus with his latest exhibition “Lambi Kahaaniyan”, which opened at Satya Art Gallery, Navjivan Trust. The exhibition, featuring 50 evocative photographs, will remain open to visitors daily from 12 noon to 9 pm until September 1, 2025.

Unlike today’s instant digital captures, Desai’s work in “Lambi Kahaaniyan” is rooted in the era of film. Every photograph showcased has been shot on film using the legendary Hasselblad XPan 35mm panoramic camera, launched in 1998. Known for its unique dual-format capability, the XPan allows both standard 35mm and panoramic images, making it ideal for expansive landscapes, cityscapes, and storytelling frames.

Sharing his journey, Desai revealed that he extensively used this camera between 2002 and 2017, creating a body of work that reflects not just moments, but “long stories” captured in still frames. “The exhibition gives today’s generation, raised in the digital age, a glimpse into how photography was once crafted on film – with patience, precision, and storytelling depth,” he said.

With “Lambi Kahaaniyan”, Vivek Desai offers more than an exhibition; he opens a window into the nostalgia and artistry of film photography, inviting viewers to experience the rhythm of daily life captured with cinematic vision.

Visitors are warmly invited to experience this remarkable exhibition at Satya Art Gallery and witness Vivek Desai’s timeless frames in person. The photographs on display are also available for purchase, offering art lovers and collectors a rare chance to own a piece of his cinematic storytelling.
