Ahmedabad :

Under the serene, undulating domes of Amdavad Ni Gufa, a half-century of artistic exploration unfolds in colour, texture, and memory. Veteran artist Anil Shah marks 50 remarkable years of creative pursuit with “The Golden Journey,” a retrospective exhibition that opened on October 14 and will run until October 19.

Bringing together a rich spectrum of works — from intimate sketches and figuratives of the 1970s to contemporary abstractions and conceptual compositions — the exhibition reflects Shah’s evolution as a painter, illustrator, and visual poet. Each canvas is a window into his shifting moods and methods, tracing how an artist converses with his time, self, and society.

“When I look back, the last 50 years have just flown by,” shared Shah, his voice filled with quiet emotion. “This exhibition is a reflection of my journey — moments of discovery, struggle, and joy — all painted across the years. Seeing them together feels both humbling and fulfilling.”

Inaugurated by poet and artist Madhav Ramanuj, the evening also saw the presence of Arvind Vakani, General Secretary of Gujarat Visual Artists Association; B.R. Prajapati, President of Gujarat Journalist Union; and Mahendra Mistry, senior artist and mentor to many in the city’s art circles.

“The Golden Journey” celebrates not just a career but a continuum — a lifetime of restless curiosity and reinvention. From delicate portraits that breathe nostalgia to bold, experimental works that challenge perception, Shah’s oeuvre carries an unbroken thread of sincerity and introspection.

For visitors, the exhibition offers a rare chance to walk through time — five decades of one artist’s evolving vision, rendered in brushstrokes that echo both discipline and dream.

“The Golden Journey” is open to the public at Amdavad Ni Gufa till October 19 — a must-visit for art lovers, students, and admirers of Ahmedabad’s cultural spirit.
