Ahmedabad: In a significant moment for Gujarat, Ahmedabad is hosting the Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International from October 14 to 17, marking the first time this prestigious global meeting is being held in the state. The 85-member delegation, representing 25 countries, is led by AP Singh, International President of Lions Clubs International. The visit blends purpose and celebration — combining an exploration of India’s most impactful community service initiatives with the vibrancy of Gujarat’s culture and Diwali festivities.
“This visit is about learning from the best,” said AP Singh, emphasizing that Lions Clubs International — the world’s largest service organisation — continues to set benchmarks in humanitarian efforts spanning healthcare, education, and social welfare. “The Lions community in Ahmedabad has executed remarkable projects that are worth studying and replicating globally,” he added.
Across India, the Lions operate an impressive network of 60 dialysis centres, 55 blood banks, 175 eye hospitals, 200+ schools, and 100+ environmental projects. A major upcoming initiative includes the development of a ₹100-crore cancer hospital in Surat.
Showcasing Gujarat’s Spirit of Service and Celebration
During their four-day visit, the delegates will engage in project tours, philanthropic activities, cultural programs, and meetings with government leaders.
The itinerary begins with visits to the Rohit Mehta Lions Medical Hub and Lions Hub in Ahmedabad, followed by a reception and cultural evening celebrating Gujarat’s artistic traditions.
On October 15, the delegation will tour key social impact centres — the Lions Karnavati Eye Hospital, Dialysis Centre, Blood Bank, and Lalji Mehrotra Lions School. The group will also take part in a special service project, distributing artificial limbs and assistive aids to over 100 specially-abled individuals, along with donating books from their home countries to enrich the school’s library.
That evening, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will host a high tea in Gandhinagar, where he will be conferred with the Lions Club International Medallion. The day will conclude with intimate Diwali dinners at Lions leaders’ homes — offering guests a firsthand experience of Indian hospitality and festive warmth.
Celebrating Humanity and Heritage
The following day’s schedule includes visits to exemplary initiatives like the Lions Hall Health & Care Foundation, Blind People’s Association, Deaf & Dumb School, Vishranti Gruh, Naroda School, and Gozaria Hospital.
The four-day visit will culminate on October 17 with a Diwali celebration at senior citizens’ homes in Ambli and Kasindra, where delegates will distribute festive hampers to over 110 elderly residents. The grand finale at Jal Tarang near Adalaj ni Vav will feature a 35-member cultural troupe from Vrindavan, presenting classical depictions of India’s beloved festivals — Janmashtami, Holi, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Shivratri.
Pravin Chhajed, Past International Director, summed up the spirit of the event:“Ahmedabad stands as a beacon of service. Our projects are not only large in scale but rooted deeply in compassion. We’re proud to share our work and our culture with the global Lions family.”
With humanitarian purpose at its heart and festive joy in its rhythm, the Lions’ international gathering in Ahmedabad perfectly embodies the organisation’s timeless motto — “We Serve.”
