Celebrating Craftsmanship: A Tribute to Timeless Design and Material Mastery

Ahmedabad : The Undergraduate students of Furniture & Interior Design (FID), Batch of 2024 at the National Institute of Design (NID), unveiled their very first furniture exhibition titled “Sab Teak Hai”, marking a significant milestone in their design journey.
The exhibition is the culmination of the Furniture Design & Construction (FDC) course — a three-week intensive module conducted by faculty members Neha Mandlik and Mayank Saini for Semester 3 students of the B.Des program. The module encouraged students to apply their knowledge of materials, joinery techniques, and spatial understanding to create functional, ergonomic, and aesthetically refined furniture pieces.
Through hands-on experience with solid wood, students learned to appreciate its strength, durability, and natural beauty, while mastering the intricacies of joinery and structural design. Each furniture piece on display embodies the elegance of craftsmanship and the thoughtful balance between form and function, reflecting how design thinking can be seamlessly transformed into tangible, user-centric creations.
From concept sketches to final construction, students engaged in every step of the making process — cutting, assembling, sanding, and finishing — gaining insights into woodworking and the problem-solving demands of real-world fabrication. The resulting collection highlights their evolving design sensibility, respect for materials, and growing technical finesse.
The exhibition invites visitors to experience these handcrafted pieces up close — a celebration of the students’ first foray into the world of making, and a tribute to the timeless allure of wood as a medium of design expression.
