In a world where self-care often takes a backseat, Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC) has found a delicious way to remind women to pause — and check. Through its unique Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, ‘Check-Olate’, ACC is turning a bar of dark chocolate into a symbol of empowerment and early detection.
Each Check-Olate bar carries a QR code linking to an animated, step-by-step guide on breast self-examination — making awareness accessible, engaging, and personal.
A Bite-Sized Reminder for a Bigger Cause
According to GLOBOCAN, breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality among Indian women, representing 13.5% of new cancer cases and 10.6% of total deaths. Yet, only 1.6% of women aged 30–69 in India have ever undergone screening (NCBI).
Through Check-Olate, Apollo Cancer Centres aims to turn awareness into action — normalising breast self-examination as a simple, monthly act of self-care.
“When Women Are Healthy, Nations Prosper”
Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, reflected on the larger mission behind this initiative:
“When women are healthy, nations prosper. Every woman’s well-being is a force multiplier that strengthens families, communities, and the economy. At Apollo, we see women’s health as a national priority and a shared responsibility. The ‘Check-Olate’ initiative reminds women that self-care is not a privilege — it’s power. It fuels a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous India.”
Chocolate with a Purpose
Actress and author Tisca Chopra found the initiative both creative and meaningful: “Everyone loves chocolate; it brings comfort, warmth, and a bit of joy into our day. What makes Check-Olate special is how it transforms something universally loved into a gentle reminder for women to care for themselves. It’s a thoughtful way to turn awareness into action.”
With dark chocolate as its core ingredient — known for antioxidants and mood-enhancing properties — Check-Olate becomes not just a treat, but a comforting messenger of care.
Doctors Urge Awareness Over Fear
Dr. Anagha Zope, Lead Consultant, Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centres, Ahmedabad, emphasized the lifesaving power of early detection:
“When it comes to breast cancer, early detection isn’t just important, it’s lifesaving. Check-Olate turns a moment of indulgence into a reminder for proactive health. A few minutes of self-examination each month can make all the difference.”
Echoing her sentiment, Dr. Shubha Sinha, Consultant Breast Onco Surgeon, added: “Awareness is the first step towards prevention. The goal is to make self-care second nature — because every woman deserves the chance to detect early, act early, and live fully.”
Survivor’s Story: Turning Pain into Power
Among those touched by Apollo’s efforts is Rinku Agrawal, Senior Scientist/Engineer at ISRO and a TEDx speaker, who courageously shared her journey as a breast cancer survivor: “Cancer is not the end of life — it’s a turning point. I chose to face it with courage and turn a painful chapter into a new beginning. Cancer patients don’t seek sympathy; they need love, care, and genuine support. Every small act of kindness can light the path to recovery.”
Her words mirror the initiative’s spirit — replacing fear with hope and action.
Sweetness That Inspires Self-Care
Beyond its symbolism, Check-Olate highlights that dark chocolate’s flavonoids and antioxidants support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve mood — making it the perfect metaphor for nurturing both body and mind.
‘Check-Olate’ is more than just an awareness campaign; it’s a movement — encouraging every woman to take a sweet pause, listen to her body, and take charge of her well-being.
