‘Sompura Sthapatya Granth’ Launched to Inspire Youth with India’s Ancient Architectural Wisdom

‘Sompura Sthapatya Granth’ Revives India’s Temple-Building Heritage for Future Generations

Launched by Pujya Bhaishri Rameshbhai Oza, the monumental work by Sompura Sthapatya Foundation preserves the legacy of India’s sacred architectural traditions and inspires youth to continue the timeless art of temple design

Unveiled by Bhagwatacharya Pujya Rameshbhai Oza (Bhaishri), the book aims to preserve and promote the traditional art and science of Sompura architecture among future generations

With the noble objective of passing on India’s rich and ancient knowledge of sculpture and architecture to the younger generation, the Sompura Sthapatya Foundation and Sompura Kelavani Kendra have successfully completed and launched the Sompura Sthapatya Granth.

The book was unveiled by world-renowned spiritual leader Bhagwatacharya Pujya Rameshbhai Oza (Bhaishri). For centuries, Sompura artisans have been deeply involved in the design and construction of Jain temples and grand monuments across India. However, only a few Sompura families today continue this time-honoured legacy of temple architecture.

Compiled by the Sompura Kelavani Kendra, the Sompura Sthapatya Granth seeks to preserve and document the traditional knowledge of temple architecture and sculpture. Sompura artisans from Somnath and various regions across India continue to uphold this heritage, and the book will serve as a valuable guide for students and aspiring architects interested in classical Indian temple design.

Speaking at the launch, Pujya Bhaishri encouraged Sompura youth to balance modern education with their ancestral traditions. “Architecture and sculpture are not merely professions but our glorious cultural heritage,” he said. “Educated young members of the Sompura community can carry forward this legacy with a professional approach while preserving its sanctity.”

Trustee of the Sompura Sthapatya Foundation, Rajesh Sompura, noted that many saints and scholars have referred to this work not just as a book but as a sacred scripture. He added, “This Granth will provide authentic guidance to new artisans, scholars, and even Ph.D. students from India and abroad who study Indian art and architecture. It will be a beacon for generations to come, helping them expand this magnificent art globally.”

India’s Sompura sculptors, through their unparalleled craftsmanship, have turned lifeless stones into living poetry — carving temples, palaces, stepwells, and monuments that stand as timeless masterpieces of devotion and artistry.
