In a landmark achievement for Indian and South Asian healthcare, the Apollo Hospitals Group has announced the successful completion of 5,000 liver transplants under its Apollo Liver Transplant Program, becoming the first hospital group in the region to reach this milestone.
Marking more than 25 years of medical innovation and compassionate care, the program has offered life-saving treatment to patients from over 50 countries battling end-stage liver disease.
A Legacy of Pioneering Milestones
Apollo Hospitals performed India’s first successful paediatric liver transplant on November 15, 1998. The recipient, Sanjay—then a 20-month-old child suffering from biliary atresia—went on to become a practicing doctor and father, symbolizing Apollo’s commitment to transforming lives through world-class healthcare.
Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder and Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, said,
“This achievement reflects our unyielding commitment to redefine what is possible in Indian healthcare. When we celebrated our first transplant in 1998, I dreamed of a future where every patient in need could access world-class solutions, regardless of geography. Crossing the 5,000-transplant mark is a tribute to that vision and the relentless spirit of our clinicians and staff.”
Global Recognition and Clinical Excellence
Between November 1998 and October 2025, the Apollo Liver Transplant Program completed 5,001 transplants, including 4,391 adult and 611 paediatric surgeries, 700 deceased donor and 73 combined liver–kidney transplants, achieving a success rate of over 90%.
Apollo’s transplant services have pioneered complex procedures such as ABO-incompatible and combined organ transplants, with some patients as young as four months old and weighing just 3.5 kg. The program is also the only liver transplant initiative in India to be honoured with a commemorative postal stamp issued by the Government of India.
Dr. Madhu Sasidhar, President and CEO of Apollo Hospitals Group, said,
“The program’s impact extends beyond numbers—from training future transplant surgeons to conducting groundbreaking research and setting new clinical benchmarks. These accomplishments inspire not only Apollo but the entire Indian medical fraternity.”
Expanding Access and Global Partnerships
Recognised internationally for its comprehensive management of liver and multi-organ diseases, Apollo’s program integrates advanced technology, affordability, and long-term recovery support. The group has also built global collaborations through training, mentorship, and standardized transplant protocols, helping strengthen liver transplant programs across hospitals—especially in the Global South.
With this milestone, Apollo Hospitals continues its mission to democratize access to world-class transplantation care through new centres across India and international partnerships, reaffirming its role as a leader in transplant medicine across Asia and beyond.
