A landmark moment awaits Gujarati cinema as ‘Kundalu’, the first-ever film made entirely in the Mahesani dialect, hits theatres on November 14. The film has already made waves globally, winning seven prestigious awards at the Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF-2024), including two special recognitions — the Green Rose Award and the Yellow Rose Award.
A Story Rooted in Tradition, Emotions, and the Search for Self
‘Kundalu’ (meaning circle in Gujarati) beautifully captures the essence of life in North Gujarat’s villages, where marriage is often seen as the ultimate marker of social acceptance.
The film follows the journey of Mangu, an orphaned girl from a poor family, and Vikas, a carefree young man struggling with a speech impediment. Their paths cross briefly before life’s harsh societal barriers pull them apart. Years later, as they wander through their own emotional circles of loneliness and longing, fate brings them together again.
Will they rediscover themselves? Will they find each other once more?
‘Kundalu’ explores these tender questions with depth and sincerity.
Authentic Locations, Real People – A Slice of Mehsana on Screen
Writer-director Rohit Prajapati, who hails from a village in Mehsana, was determined to portray his roots with honesty. The entire film was shot in the villages of Mehsana, where locals opened their homes, fields, and hearts to the crew. On the last day of shooting, a breathtaking sunset behind the hilltop temple became an unforgettable memory for the entire team.
Music That Breathes the Fragrance of Mehsana’s Soil
- Music directors Vipul Barot and Swayam have blended original compositions with traditional marasiya, doha, and garba, creating a soundtrack that feels deeply rooted in North Gujarat.
- Songs like “Harkhato Malkato”, “Kaydama Rehvu”, “Chadh Laadi Chadh”, “Pankhida Tara Pagle”, and “Rupiyani Rani” capture the film’s soul.
- Voices of singers including Bhoomi Trivedi, Jay Mohan, Tripti Gadhvi, Parthi Vyas, Richa Barot, and others elevate the emotional tone of the narrative.
