The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, is set to host “LINES OF LEGACY,” a groundbreaking student-curated exhibition honouring the life and work of the Late Shri Gajanan Upadhyaya — widely celebrated as the “Furniture Man of India.” The showcase, which opens this November and runs until 15 December 2025, will be held at the NID Archives Room.

Developed by students Abhishek Dutta and Arun Surya as part of the KMC Summer Internship Programme 2025, the exhibition has been created with extensive support from NID faculty and the Knowledge Management Centre (KMC).
“Lines of Legacy” brings together rare archival materials, furniture models, sketches, and design narratives to spotlight Upadhyaya’s pioneering contributions to Indian furniture design. His deep-rooted emphasis on indigenous materials, craftsmanship, and ergonomic innovation continues to shape the ethos of design education in India.
NID officials note that the exhibition aims to spark a cross-generational conversation on the evolution of Indian furniture design — bridging the past, present and future.
Open to students, design enthusiasts, industry professionals, and the public, the exhibition promises to be a rich learning experience and a fitting tribute to one of India’s most influential design visionaries.
