In a significant push toward indigenous security innovation, students from the National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad have developed “STRIX,” a Tactical Surveillance UAV engineered specifically for rapid-response police operations and internal security missions across India.
Designed as part of the institute’s Tactical Communication Project, STRIX is a lightweight, field-ready surveillance drone that stands out for its quick deployment ability, compact build and rugged performance in challenging terrains.
According to the student design team, STRIX can be deployed in under 60 seconds, enabling police personnel to respond swiftly during high-pressure scenarios. Its one-person portability—with a backpack-friendly form factor—makes it ideal for frontline use in crowded, remote or constrained environments.
The UAV also features a low-noise propulsion system for stealth operations, a key requirement in sensitive surveillance and covert missions. Built with a modular architecture, the drone allows rapid repairs, adaptability to evolving missions and flexibility to integrate dynamic payloads as required by security agencies.
Developed through primary interviews with police officers and home-security experts, the project addresses on-ground challenges such as portability issues, immediate action requirements and the difficulty of accessing tight or high-risk zones.
The students have built a proof-of-concept working model, complete with a validated propulsion and control system tested through successful flight trials. The working architecture demonstrates not only feasibility but also the potential for future scaling and deployment.
STRIX reflects a broader vision to contribute to India’s growing indigenous defence and security ecosystem, aligning with national safety priorities and evolving UAV regulations.
With further refinement and prototyping, innovations like STRIX may soon strengthen India’s law enforcement capabilities—offering a homegrown technological advantage in tactical surveillance.
