Ahmedabad International Airport Limited (AIAL), operator of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, has undertaken proactive preparedness measures to ensure smooth, uninterrupted flight operations for passengers and airlines. With the upcoming winter season, low visibility in the northern regions often leads to flight delays and cancellations.
Ahmedabad Airport’s infrastructure and geographical location place it among the few airports in the region capable of handling operations under low-visibility conditions. SVPIA, in collaboration with AAI, has ensured that all navigational aids (NAVAIDS) and airfield lighting systems have been serviced and calibrated, with additional checks performed before the start of the season. A recent calibration flight for the new glide path in the south of Runway 05-23, supported by airline partners, further strengthened operational readiness. The airport’s capacity to manage diversions has also been boosted, with a few aircraft stands (Code C) always reserved for incoming diverted flights. The airport successfully accommodated over 90 diversions from nearby airports during the period between December 2024 and October 2025, underscoring its reliability and operational resilience.
Beyond technological readiness, Ahmedabad Airport has carried out thorough ground preparations, including fresh runway markings, thorough maintenance of runway lights and approach lights, and increased on-ground manpower to ensure aircraft’s seamless operations during low-visibility conditions.
At the terminals, increased seating and well-stocked F&B outlets will passengers who are impacted by delayed flights. Additionally, all stakeholders have been asked to revisit and strengthen their contingency plans based on three years of fog forecast and analysis provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
A robust advisory system will keep passengers informed about delays and diversions through official communications on the airport’s social media handles and website. Security and landside staff levels have also been increased to support smooth passenger movement and parking operations.
SVPIA remains committed towards operational resilience, a passenger-first approach, and collaborative engagement with airlines and other airport stakeholders during the challenging fog season to ensure seamless traveller movements.
