Anjala S.S. of National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad Honoured at National Level for Design Innovation

The M.Des Ceramic and Glass Design (2022 batch) student secures Third Rank in the Design for Bharat category at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026 for her project “Automorphosis” on automobile glass recycling in India

Anjala S.S student of M.Des Ceramic and Glass Design 2022 batch of National Institute of Design Ahmedabad was honoured to receive Third Rank in the Design for Bharat category at the national level of the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026, for her project Automorphosis, which focuses on glass recycling in India, particularly automobile glass waste.

Automorphosis is a design-led intervention addressing the critical issue of discarded automobile glass. Although glass is 100% recyclable, automobile glass often ends up in landfills due to the safety treatments it undergoes, which complicate recycling and handling. Through this project, I propose a systemic approach to reclaiming discarded windshields and windows, transforming them into valuable material resources rather than waste.

She had the honour of being a national-level participant representing National Institute of Design , Ahmedabad in Design for Bharat, a youth innovation challenge aligned with India’s Viksit Bharat@2047 vision. The initiative is part of the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with the Department of Youth Affairs and the School of Planning and Architecture as knowledge partners.

The journey began in Gujarat with an interaction with Shri Acharya Devvrat, followed by engagements with  officials

At the national venue in New Delhi, the dialogue featured interactions with leaders from various fields, including  Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Hemang Joshi, senior official associated with youth affairs initiatives,  C. R. Paatil, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, ISRO astronaut  Shubhanshu Shukla,  Prashant Nair, senior officer of the Indian Air Force, National Security Advisor  Ajit Doval, and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Design for Bharat encourages young innovators between the ages of 18 and 29 to develop design-driven solutions for India’s socio-economic and environmental challenges, rooted in the theme “Duality / Dwividhata” exploring the balance between tradition and modernity, growth and sustainability.

The scale of participation reflected the growing engagement of India’s youth in nation-building. Over 50 lakh participants took part across the country, with around 3,000 students shortlisted across multiple thematic tracks. From these, 26 participants from different states were selected for the national-level Design for Bharat showcase in New Delhi. The multi-stage process spanning district, state, and national levels included exhibitions, presentations, and dialogues, bringing together students, designers, thinkers, and young leaders on a single national platform.

The address by  Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the dialogue deeply resonated with me. His emphasis on absorbing global ideas while preserving the dignity of India’s ancient wisdom reinforced a powerful message that progress must never come at the cost of cultural identity.

Initiatives like Design for Bharat create much-needed space for young designers and innovators to step forward, understand existing systems, and propose alternative futures. Being part of this journey reaffirmed her belief that design has the power to bridge waste and value, tradition and innovation, and ideas and action all essential for building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
