Ahmedabad is currently hosting “Ekaa – The One: The 64 Yoginis Trail,” a travelling exhibition by contemporary artist Beena S. Unnikrishnan, now on view at the Hutheesing Visual Art Gallery through February 13. The exhibition forms part of an 81-day, 16-state national tour that began in New Delhi in December 2025.
The exhibition presents 64 original paintings inspired by the ancient Yogini traditions of India, reinterpreting the Yogini goddesses through a contemporary feminist and spiritual lens. Conceived as an immersive experience rather than a conventional display, the project positions the Yoginis as symbolic embodiments of Shakti—representing diverse dimensions of consciousness, knowledge and inner power—rather than strictly ritual icons.
“Ekaa – The One” is the culmination of the artist’s decade-long research and spiritual exploration, during which she travelled to major Yogini temple sites including Hirapur (Odisha), Morena (Madhya Pradesh), Bhedaghat and Khajuraho, studying temple histories, mythological narratives and the experiential qualities associated with these sacred spaces. Instead of replicating historical sculptures, Unnikrishnan offers intuitive, meditative visual interpretations that merge human and divine forms, portraying Yoginis as powerful contemporary feminine presences expressing themes of courage, transformation, protection and awakening.
The Ahmedabad presentation brings all 64 canvases together to create an immersive visual environment that frames the Yoginis as aesthetic, philosophical and cultural archetypes relevant to modern audiences. The exhibition is accompanied by the artist’s book “Whispers of the Unseen: The Quest for Sixty-Four Yoginis,” as well as preview screenings of the 65-minute documentary “Y64 – Whispers of the Unseen,” directed by Jain Joseph, which traces the artist’s travels and creative process.
After Ahmedabad, the exhibition will continue its nationwide journey to Jaipur, Delhi and Gwalior, concluding in April after covering approximately 10,000 kilometres across India.
