In an inspiring display of social harmony, more than 2,000 members of the Kshatriya Thakor community from over 45 villages of Patan district gathered at Kasumbal Ness in Lapkaman, Ahmedabad, to perform a historic collective ‘Mameru’ at the wedding of the daughter of philanthropist Bababhai Kanjibhai Bharwad.
What made the evening extraordinary was not just the scale of participation—but the spirit behind it.
A Tradition, Reimagined
In Gujarati culture, Mameru is a cherished wedding ritual where the bride’s maternal family offers gifts and blessings. On Friday evening, however, the tradition took on a much larger meaning. The Thakor community embraced Bababhai Bharwad’s family as their own, symbolically stepping into the role of maternal relatives.
For many elders present, it was a moment they described as “historic.” For the first time in North Gujarat, 42 sub-groups of the Thakor community and members of the Jagirdar Darbar community united for a shared social celebration—transcending long-standing divides.
Gratitude in Action
Bababhai Kanjibhai Bharwad, a former corporator from Ghatlodia, is widely respected for his philanthropic work. Over the years, he has donated crores from his personal funds to support the education of girls from the Kshatriya Thakor community and other economically backward sections, particularly in the Patan region. His initiatives have included distributing tablets and bicycles to students—small tools that opened big doors.
Friday’s collective Mameru was not merely ceremonial—it was an expression of gratitude.
“Bababhai invested in our daughters’ futures,” said one community elder. “Today, we stand with his daughter as our own.”
Leaders Stand Witness
The event drew prominent political and social figures, including:
- Bharatsinh Solanki
- Lovingji Thakor
- Amaratji Thakor
- Baldevji Thakor
- Bharatbhai Arya
- Lakhabhai Bharwad
Their presence underscored the broader social and political importance of the gathering. Several leaders described the occasion as a “living example of social constitution in action.”
More Than a Ceremony
Held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on February 20, the event unfolded in an atmosphere of discipline and celebration. Rows of community members offered blessings, traditional gifts, and symbolic support—transforming a private wedding ritual into a public statement of unity.
Observers noted that in a time when divisions often dominate headlines, this collective gesture sent a powerful counter-message: unity is possible when gratitude and shared values take center stage.
A Moment for Gujarat
The evening ended not just with wedding songs and smiles, but with a renewed pledge—to strengthen the social fabric of Gujarat and carry forward the spirit of cooperation beyond ceremonial occasions.
For the Thakor community of Patan, this was more than filling a Mameru.
It was filling a social gap—with respect, recognition, and unity.
