In a significant advancement for healthcare in Gujarat, Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad has successfully carried out its first-ever heart transplant, offering new hope to patients suffering from end-stage heart failure.
The highly complex procedure was performed on a patient who had been undergoing prolonged treatment for severe cardiac failure and had exhausted all other medical options. After months of monitoring, a compatible donor heart was allocated through the organ donation network, enabling the life-saving surgery.
The transplant was led by senior cardio-thoracic and vascular surgeon Dr. Atul Maslekar, along with a specialised team including Dr. Alpesh Patel, Dr. Utkarsh Sanghvi, Dr. Hetal Shah, and Dr. Tejas Kanzaria. The operation involved coordinated efforts from surgical, critical care, ICU, and nursing teams.
Dr. Maslekar described the procedure as a landmark achievement, emphasizing that heart transplantation requires precision at every stage—from patient selection to post-operative care. He noted that the hospital aims to build a sustainable, high-quality transplant program to improve survival and quality of life for patients with advanced heart disease.
The patient is currently recovering well under close medical supervision. The patient’s family expressed gratitude to the donor family for their selfless act and to the medical team for giving a second chance at life.
Hospital officials highlighted that this milestone reflects their commitment to advanced healthcare delivery. Facility Director Hemant Bhatnagar stated that the successful transplant underscores continued investment in infrastructure, clinical expertise, and governance, with the goal of establishing the hospital as a centre of excellence for complex procedures.
The achievement was made possible through seamless coordination between transplant authorities, medical teams, and the donor’s family.
