A product design student from Anant National University, Vagmi V S, represented India at the prestigious UN ECOSOC Youth Forum 2026 held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Selected by the Government of India, he was among five Indian delegates and the only industrial designer in the delegation, highlighting the increasing relevance of design in global policy discussions.
Vagmi’s work focuses on sustainability, water conservation, and community engagement. His design background has enabled him to approach real-world challenges with structured problem-solving, allowing him to contribute meaningfully to discussions around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the forum, he demonstrated how design can help convert policy frameworks into practical, on-ground solutions.
Addressing global delegates and policymakers, Vagmi spoke about shifting from “climate anxiety” to what he termed the “agency of change,” urging youth to take active responsibility in shaping sustainable futures. His insights showcased how design thinking can bridge the gap between policy intent and implementation.
His journey—from participating in Model United Nations and the National Youth Parliament during school to representing India on a global stage—reflects the evolving scope of design education. It also underlines how design careers today intersect with sustainability, public policy, and innovation.
