Abdul El-Sayed Clinches Michigan Democratic Senate Primary, Sets Up High-Stakes November Battle

Detroit, August 5: Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won the Michigan Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, narrowly defeating Congresswoman Haley Stevens in one of the closest and most closely watched races of the 2026 election cycle. The Associated Press projected El-Sayed the winner with a lead of about one percentage point after nearly all ballots were counted.

The victory marks a major breakthrough for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. El-Sayed, a former public health official, campaigned on issues including universal healthcare and economic reforms, overcoming heavy spending by outside groups that backed Stevens.

El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers, who secured the GOP nomination unopposed, in the November general election. The contest is expected to be one of the nation’s most competitive Senate races and could play a pivotal role in determining control of the U.S. Senate.

Interestingly, if Abdul El-Sayed wins the November general election, he would become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate in American history.
