The Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust (MGSAMT) and the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a collaborative partnership focused on the design-led development of the Gandhi Ashram.
The partnership will bring together design, research, education and innovation to support the ongoing development of the Ashram while contributing to the larger vision of preserving and promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and ideals for future generations.
The collaboration will also focus on enhancing the visitor experience and strengthening the cultural significance of the Sabarmati Ashram precinct, while ensuring that design and innovation remain closely aligned with its heritage and values.
Under the MoU, NID will provide design expertise and advisory support in several key areas, including:
- Review of the final museum designs and content.
- Design advisory services for the overall look and feel of the Ashram.
- Conceptualisation and development of a curated range of souvenir products inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s life, values and association with Sabarmati Ashram and Gujarat.
- Design and development of a distinctive visual identity and logo for the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust.
The partnership is envisioned as a platform for mutual learning, knowledge exchange and socially responsive, design-led innovation. It seeks to bring together NID’s expertise in design with MGSAMT’s vision for the preservation and development of the Gandhi Ashram.
The collaboration marks an important step towards integrating design excellence with heritage conservation, public engagement and cultural education. It further reinforces the role of Sabarmati Ashram as a living institution that continues to inspire generations through the ideals, values and vision of Mahatma Gandhi.
