1. Electoral Roll Revision Triggers Nationwide Political Row
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls remained at the centre of a major political controversy. Opposition parties intensified their criticism of the Election Commission, while the poll body defended its procedures and announced a review of ECINET’s compliance with applicable rules. 

2. Election Commission Drops Controversial Form 6 Change
The Election Commission removed the SIR-related declaration added to the statutory Form 6 in states where the revision process had been finalised. The issue had become contentious after objections to the change emerged. 

3. Opposition Announces ‘Save Democracy March’
Following a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, the Opposition announced district-level “Save Democracy March” programmes from October 2 to 8 and planned further demonstrations over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions. 

4. Heavy Rains and Floods Batter Parts of India
Heavy rainfall affected several states during the week. Schools were shut in parts of Uttar Pradesh following weather warnings, while worsening floods disrupted connectivity in Bastar and prompted rescue operations. 

5. 19 Die After Suspected Spurious Liquor Consumption in Nagaland
At least 19 people died after allegedly consuming adulterated liquor in Nagaland. Police formed a Special Investigation Team, arrested several people and seized thousands of bottles as investigators sought to trace the supply chain. 

6. Top Lashkar-e-Taiba Commander Killed in J&K Encounter
Security forces killed Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Mohammad Asif, alias Hashim Moosa, in an encounter in Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Officials linked him to several attacks in the region in recent years.

7. Coast Guard Makes Major Drug Seizure at Sea
The Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat ATS intercepted an Iranian boat near Lakshadweep and seized 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin. Five Pakistani nationals aboard the vessel were detained.

8. Gandhi Jayanti Observed Across India
India marked Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary on October 2, with tributes and commemorative programmes recalling his message of truth, non-violence and peaceful resistance. Special Gram Sabhas were also planned across the country as part of the observance. The Indian Express

Captain Smit Machchhar drew widespread praise after helping save a Flydubai flight following an alleged cockpit attack by the co-pilot. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Indian pilot and praised his courage in helping avert a major tragedy.

American troops left Iraq after a military presence stretching back more than two decades, marking a significant shift in Washington’s security role in the country even as concerns over militant groups and regional tensions remain. 

4. Iran Warns of Stronger Response to Any New Attack
Iran said it was preparing a broader and more forceful response should the United States resume large-scale military attacks, as diplomatic prospects remained uncertain amid heightened Middle East tensions. 

5. North Korea Tests Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile
North Korea confirmed another intermediate-range strategic ballistic missile test, supervised by leader Kim Jong Un. The launch added to tensions on the Korean Peninsula and drew renewed attention from neighbouring South Korea and Japan.
