The skies over Bhavnagar turned into a spectacular display of precision and patriotism as the Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team performed an impressive air show over Bor Talav (Gaurishankar Lake) on Sunday. The event, the first of its kind hosted by the city, attracted large crowds who gathered along the lake and at various vantage points to witness the aerial spectacle.
Nine red-and-white Hawk Mk-132 aircraft took to the skies, performing a series of challenging aerobatic manoeuvres, including close-formation flying, wingtip-to-wingtip formations, loops, rolls and inverted flying. Adding to the visual spectacle, the aircraft released saffron, white and green smoke trails, creating a striking representation of the Indian national flag. The 30-40-minute performance showcased the pilots’ exceptional skills, coordination and professionalism.
Established in 1996, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team is recognised as Asia’s only nine-aircraft aerobatic formation. Having completed more than 800 air displays in India and abroad, the team is widely regarded as an ambassador of the Indian Air Force. The team is commanded by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, with Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh serving as Flight Commander.
The event also featured several activities aimed at connecting with the public, particularly young people. An Indian Air Force motivational stall provided information about career opportunities, selection procedures and life in the armed forces. An air simulator gave visitors an opportunity to experience aircraft controls and basic flying procedures.
The Air Force Band of Headquarters South Western Air Command added to the celebrations with a musical performance featuring patriotic songs, martial tunes and ceremonial compositions.
Organised jointly by the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation and the District Administration, the event was open to the public free of charge. Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Bambhaniya attended as the Chief Guest. Air Vice Marshal GS Bhullar, senior officials of the Gujarat government and elected representatives were also present.
The successful air show highlighted the Indian Air Force’s commitment to public outreach while showcasing the discipline, teamwork and operational excellence of its personnel. The combination of aerial manoeuvres, interactive activities and patriotic music made the event an inspiring experience for Bhavnagar residents, particularly the younger generation.
