The team behind Gujarati comedy-drama film Damru has appealed to the Gujarat Government, cinema owners and distributors to ensure fair showtimes and screen allocation for the regional film, citing strong audience demand despite limited theatrical availability.
Produced under the banners of Gujotsav Productions and Vraj Films, Damru is directed by Hardik Pareekh and features actors Sanjay Goradia, Nakshraj, Maulik Chauhan and Makrand Shukla, among others. Since its recent theatrical release, the film has reportedly received an encouraging response from Gujarati audiences, with several shows witnessing housefull occupancy.
However, the team claims that the film is struggling to secure adequate screens and showtimes due to competition from big-budget Hindi and other language releases during the festive season, including Ramayana. They pointed out that despite audience interest, regional films often face difficulties in securing screening slots because of distribution pressures and conditions imposed by major production houses.
Addressing the media, the representatives said the issue extends beyond Damru and affects the entire Gujarati film industry, including technicians, cameramen, lightmen, spot boys and artists whose livelihoods depend on regional cinema.
They also highlighted the affordability of Gujarati films, with ticket prices generally ranging between Rs. 100 and Rs. 200, compared to the significantly higher prices of some major releases during festive periods. They said regional cinema offers middle-class families an accessible entertainment option in their mother tongue.
Clarifying that they are not opposed to big-budget films, the team stressed that Gujarati films deserve a fair opportunity to reach their audiences in their home state. They appealed to multiplexes and single-screen theatres to allocate at least one or two shows for Damru, wherever audience demand supports it.
The appeal was addressed to the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Government of Gujarat, along with cinema owners and distributors, urging them to support Gujarati cinema and help preserve the state’s language and cultural identity.
Actors Makrand Shukla, Nakshraj, Saurabh Rajyaguru and Maulik Chauhan, along with producers Ramesh Prajapati and Sanjay Soni, and director Hardik Pareekh, were present during the media interaction.
