In an important move to strengthen the safety and security of the regional travel sector, the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), in collaboration with the Government of Assam, has successfully completed a specialized training program for 155 police officers to modernize tourism policing. At the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, a specialized group of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 123 Sub-Inspectors completed rigorous training designed to modernize state security in accordance with international “Smart Policing” benchmarks.

The curriculum was designed to address the multifaceted nature of modern tourism, blending legal rigor with soft skills and technological proficiency. Officers received training on critical legal frameworks, including the Foreigners Act, tourist rights, and the latest provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Beyond legalities, the program integrated IT-enabled tools and applications to streamline assistance for international and domestic travellers, ensuring that the Assam Police are equipped with futuristic skills to meet emerging challenges in the field.
The training program utilized modern pedagogical techniques to move beyond traditional policing methods. Participants engaged in interactive, scenario-based discussions, role-playing exercises, and complex case simulations to prepare for the unique challenges of managing tourist safety in diverse environments. Sessions also covered stress management, nutritional strategies, and the psychological aspects of policing to ensure officers remain resilient in high-pressure tourist zones. The training emphasized cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution, and emergency response, ensuring that the 155 graduates are prepared to act as ambassadors for the state while maintaining rigorous safety protocols.
During the conclusion and valedictory of the program, officials discussed the “way forward,” focusing on the long-term integration of these specialized units into the state’s security infrastructure.
Assam’s strategic importance as the gateway to Southeast Asia and the primary hub for India’s North-eastern region makes this initiative particularly timely. The state currently serves as a transit and destination point for majority of the region’s population. As international investments pour into Assam—specifically within the semiconductor, industrial, and tourism sectors—the government is prioritizing a secure environment to maintain investor confidence and tourist satisfaction. This program sets a new benchmark in governance and police reform, reinforcing Assam’s vision as a safe, investor-friendly, and premier global tourist destination.
This collaboration between Rashtriya Raksha University and the Assam Police marks a milestone in the state’s commitment to fostering a secure and welcoming environment for global tourism.
