Rare Moon Halo Dazzles Ahmedabad Sky watchers !

Residents across Ahmedabad were treated to a stunning celestial display late last night as a glowing ring encircled the Moon, creating what is known as a lunar halo. The phenomenon, while not extremely rare, is uncommon enough to leave many sky watchers in awe.

The halo appeared as a large, faint circular ring surrounding the bright Moon, visible to the naked eye despite the city’s usual light pollution. Several residents captured the moment on their mobile phones, sharing images of the ethereal ring that seemed to float in the night sky.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Sajid Khan, one observer. “At first, I thought it was a camera effect, but it was clearly visible in the sky.”

According to atmospheric science, a lunar halo forms when moonlight passes through millions of tiny ice crystals suspended in high-altitude clouds, typically cirrostratus clouds. These crystals bend the light at a specific angle—about 22 degrees—creating a perfectly circular ring around the Moon.

Interestingly, such halos have long been associated with changing weather patterns. Meteorologists note that the presence of these high, thin clouds can sometimes indicate that a weather system may be approaching.

Last night’s display coincided with a bright, nearly full Moon, making the halo more prominent and easier to observe. The combination of clear skies and thin cloud cover created ideal conditions for the phenomenon.

While lunar halos can occur anywhere in the world, sightings are often missed or overlooked. For many in Ahmedabad, however, this was a memorable reminder of the beauty that occasionally unfolds above the city skyline.

Experts encourage skywatchers to keep an eye on the night sky, especially during bright moon phases, as such natural spectacles can appear without warning—and disappear just as quickly.
