Strengthening cancer care infrastructure in Gujarat, Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad on Saturday inaugurated its state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology Centre, bringing advanced radiation treatment closer to patients across the state. The facility was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, who attended the event as the chief guest.

The newly launched centre is equipped with the advanced Halcyon radiation therapy system, designed to deliver faster, highly precise, and image-guided radiation treatments. The facility aims to improve access to quality cancer care and reduce the need for patients to travel to distant cities for specialised treatment.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Devi Shetty, Founder and Chairman of Narayana Health, highlighted the growing burden of cancer and the importance of timely treatment.

“The burden of cancer is rising, and the margin for delay is shrinking every day. Early and precise intervention can be the difference between recovery and irreversible progression. Every patient deserves access to quality treatment close to home,” he said.

Facility Director Hemant Bhatnagar said the centre reflects the hospital’s commitment to making world-class cancer treatment available locally.

“With the Halcyon system, we are equipped to treat a larger number of patients with greater accuracy, shorter treatment durations and an improved overall care experience,” he noted.

India currently has only about 550 operational radiotherapy machines, significantly below the World Health Organization’s recommendation of one machine per million population. Gujarat alone reports an estimated 70,000 to 73,000 new cancer cases annually, with nearly 40 per cent detected at advanced stages where timely intervention becomes critical.

The Halcyon system employs daily CT imaging for millimetre-level tumour targeting before each treatment session. It supports advanced techniques such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, enabling precise high-dose radiation delivery while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Some treatment sessions can be completed in as little as two minutes.

Dr. Tasneem Nalawala, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad, said the technology significantly enhances patient comfort and treatment efficiency.

“Shorter treatment times make a meaningful difference for patients, especially those who find prolonged sessions challenging. The Halcyon system allows us to maintain the highest clinical standards while making treatment more accessible,” she said.

With the addition of Radiation Oncology to its existing Medical Oncology and Surgical Oncology services, Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad now offers comprehensive cancer care under one roof. The integrated approach is expected to benefit patients from Ahmedabad and neighbouring districts by providing access to the full spectrum of oncology services within the region.

Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad is a multispeciality tertiary care facility offering services across cardiac sciences, oncology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, critical care and other specialties. The hospital serves patients through various healthcare schemes, including PMJAY, CGHS, ESIC, ECHS, insurance providers and corporate empanelments.
