Iran Invites PM Modi to Attend Ayatollah Khamenei’s State Funeral in July

New Delhi |

Iran has formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral and burial ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The invitation was extended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed to India’s Ministry of External Affairs through the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi.

Key Details
The funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place from July 4–9, 2026 across several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, where Khamenei is expected to be buried.
The Indian government has not yet announced whether Modi will attend personally or who will represent India at the event.
Diplomatic sources indicate that India is considering the level of representation it will send, with a decision likely closer to the ceremony dates.

Why It Matters

The invitation comes at a sensitive time in West Asian geopolitics. India maintains important relations with Iran, while also having strong strategic ties with the United States and Israel. India’s response to the invitation will be watched closely as a signal of its diplomatic balancing in the region.
