EPIC Multispecialty Hospital has partnered with Chennai-based MGM Healthcare to strengthen heart-transplant and advanced heart-failure care in Gujarat.
Under the clinical partnership, specialists from MGM Healthcare’s Institute of Heart & Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support will be available at EPIC for heart-transplant surgeries. The two institutions will also collaborate on Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation for eligible patients with advanced heart failure.
EPIC, a 280-bed multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad, is an approved heart-transplant centre and has already performed transplant surgeries. The partnership will bring MGM Healthcare’s expertise in heart transplantation, advanced heart-failure management and mechanical circulatory support to patients in Gujarat and neighbouring states.
The collaboration comes against the backdrop of a rise in heart-transplant activity in Gujarat. According to National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) data cited by the institutions, Gujarat recorded 13 heart transplants in 2021, rising to 20 in 2022, 29 in 2023, 33 in 2024 and 36 in 2025. During the same period, India recorded 153, 243, 221, 253 and 239 heart transplants respectively.
Gujarat’s share of the country’s heart transplants consequently increased from 8.50% in 2021 to 15.06% in 2025. Between 2023 and 2025, the state accounted for 98 of the 713 heart transplants performed nationally, or 13.74%.
Dr Anil Jain, Founder Director, EPIC Multispecialty Hospital, said the partnership would strengthen the specialist expertise available to patients and add depth to the management of complex transplant cases. He said collaboration on LVAD implantation would provide another treatment option for eligible patients with advanced heart failure.

Balakrishnan, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences and Director, Institute of Heart & Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, MGM Healthcare, said patients with advanced or end-stage heart failure may require different forms of advanced therapy depending on their condition, including transplantation or mechanical circulatory support. He said MGM specialists would work with the EPIC team on both heart-transplant procedures and LVAD implantation.
LVADs provide mechanical circulatory support when conventional treatment is no longer sufficient. For patients who are candidates for a heart transplant, an LVAD may also be used as a bridge to transplant while they await a suitable donor heart or undergo evaluation.
Dr Balakrishnan has more than three decades of experience in advanced heart-failure management, heart transplantation, LVAD implantation and mechanical circulatory support, and has performed more than 1,000 heart and lung transplants, according to MGM Healthcare.
EPIC’s cardiac surgery team, under Dr Anil Jain, has performed more than 50,000 open-heart surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting and other complex cardiac procedures, according to the hospital.
