After a gap of 12 years, Crraft Of Art is set to return to the historic Bhadra precinct of Ahmedabad with a grand celebration of art, culture, music, theatre and heritage. The organisation has announced two cultural events – the Bhadra Festival on November 19 and the Water Heritage Series on November 25, celebrating the architectural and cultural legacy of Ahmedabad, a UNESCO-recognised World Heritage City.

Conceived and curated by Crraft Of Art and supported by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the festivals will bring together traditional and contemporary artistic expressions at some of the city’s iconic heritage locations.

The Bhadra Festival will begin at 4 pm on November 19, with programmes spread across Bhadra Fort, the Premabhai Hall precinct and Bhadra Plaza, culminating in a grand musical concert at Teen Darwaza at 7:15 pm.

The festival will feature a diverse line-up of traditional performances, including Nagara by Nathulal Solanki and troupe, Ravanhatta by Vijanand Turi and troupe, Sidi Dhamal by the Sidi Goma Dance Group, Mallakhamb by Incredible Mallakhamb from Maharashtra and Natya Sangeet by Nisarg Trivedi and Ensemble.

Theatre and storytelling will be another major attraction, featuring a giant puppet parade by Dadi Pudumjee’s Ishara Puppet Theatre, Dastan-e-Darwaza through Dastangoi and Bhadrakhyan, a traditional Gujarati narrative performance.

Three exhibitions will offer visitors a glimpse into Bhadra’s history and cultural identity. These include History of Bhadra, an archival photographic exhibition at Bhadra Fort; RANG SMRUTI – The Living Archives of Gujarati Theatre, curated by Manvita Baradi at Premabhai Hall; and Bhadra Unposed, an outdoor photographic installation by Vinay Panjwani.

The festival will also feature projection mapping on Bhadra Fort, a contemporary kinetic art installation and a visual presentation inspired by Mata ni Pachedi on the façade of Premabhai Hall.

The evening’s musical highlight at Teen Darwaza will feature Ustad Fazal Qureshi on tabla alongside George Brooks on saxophone, Sheldon D’Silva on bass, Arun Kumar on drums and Rahul Wadhwani on keyboards. This will be followed by a sitar performance by Ustad Shujaat Khan, accompanied by Amit Choubey and Sapan Anjaria on tabla. The programme will be hosted by Manav Gohil.

The celebrations will continue on November 25 with the Water Heritage Series, themed ‘Three Stepwells. One Day. Dawn to Dusk.’ The event will bring together classical music, poetry and dance at three historic stepwells.

The programme will begin at 6:30 am at Jethabhai Ni Vav with Vaav Sur, featuring a Hindustani classical vocal recital by Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi.

At 11 am, Amrutvarshini Vav will host Vaav Varta, featuring poetry by Soumya Joshi and Anil Chavda, along with a special Bharatanatyam presentation by dancer Prachi Saathi.

The series will conclude at 7 pm at Dada Harir Ni Vav with Vaav Tarang, a musical performance led by Ustad Fazal Qureshi on tabla. The ensemble will include Dilshad Khan on sarangi, Saskia Rao on cello, Dera Khan on kamaicha, Khete Khan and Zakir Khan on khartal, with Himali Vyas Naik as the special guest vocalist.

Speaking about the return to Bhadra, Birwa Qureshi, Founder and Artistic Director of Crraft Of Art, said the festival aims to bring together the many layers of the historic precinct, including its architecture, theatre, music, traditions and everyday life, encouraging people to rediscover familiar heritage spaces through new cultural experiences.

Founded in 2010, Crraft Of Art has organised cultural experiences at several historic monuments across India, including Sarkhej Roza, Adalaj Ni Vav, Dholavira, Champaner-Pavagadh, Rani ki Vav, Modhera, Ellora and Golconda Fort.

Entry and Registration: Entry to both festivals is free. Prior registration through BookMyShow is mandatory for Bhadra Fort and the Teen Darwaza concert. The other Bhadra Festival areas are freely accessible without registration. The Water Heritage Series also requires prior registration, with limited seating at all three stepwells.
