Ahmedabad, June 29: The Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) recently hosted a thought-provoking session featuring Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, on the theme “Diction, Diplomacy, and Discretion.”
In his welcome note, AMA Honorary Secretary Mohal Sarabhai remarked, “Diplomacy can be achieved through diction and discretion,” describing Dr. Tharoor as a living example of this principle.
The conversation was moderated by Dr. Jainil Shah, Chairman of AMA’s Programme Committee. Dr. Tharoor engaged the audience with a wide-ranging discussion that spanned diplomatic insights, reflections on education, and personal anecdotes. Drawing from his extensive tenure at the United Nations, he illustrated how language and cultural sensitivity are vital tools in international relations.
The dialogue also offered glimpses into Dr. Tharoor’s formative years—his early education, the influence of his mother, and his unconventional views on schooling. He recalled completing his Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) and Ph.D. in the United States within a remarkably short span.

Adding a personal touch, Dr. Tharoor spoke of his family’s connection to the iconic brand Amul, reminiscing about his sisters’ involvement and the evolution of the newspaper industry during his youth, when editions were limited to 6–8 pages.
He also reflected on his impactful stint with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which played a significant role in shaping his global perspective and career.
The event was attended by professionals, students, and members of the public, offering a unique opportunity to engage with one of India’s most eloquent voices on diplomacy and public life.
