Celebrating five decades of enduring friendship between India and Japan, the Indo-Japan Friendship Association Gujarat (IJFA) has officially launched its Golden Jubilee celebrations with GOLDFEST 2026, a grand five-day cultural festival being held from January 10 to 14, 2026.
The festival commemorates 50 years of IJFA’s pioneering work in strengthening Indo–Japan ties and also marks the first anniversary of the Hamamatsu–Ahmedabad Sister City relationship and the Shizuoka Prefecture–Gujarat Sister State partnership, reinforcing Gujarat’s growing identity as the “Mini-Japan of India.”

Patang-O-Dori: When Japanese Kites Meet Amdavadi Skies
GOLDFEST 2026 opened with the inauguration of “Patang-O-Dori”, India’s first-ever Japanese kite exhibition, hosted at the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA). The exhibition presents a vibrant cultural dialogue between Hamamatsu—Japan’s renowned kite-flying city—and Ahmedabad, the heart of India’s kite traditions. Traditional Japanese kites and lanterns gifted by Hamamatsu City are displayed alongside narratives highlighting the shared values of family, community, and celebration embedded in kite-flying cultures.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Megumi Shimada, Consul for Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai, in the presence of Mukesh Patel, Honorary Consul of Japan in Ahmedabad, along with senior Japanese and Indian dignitaries.
Reflecting on the occasion, Shimada noted that the bond between Hamamatsu and Ahmedabad goes far beyond geography, language, or culture, rooted instead in shared aspirations, traditions, and people-to-people connections.
Exhibition Dates: January 11 & 12, 2026
Timings: 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM
A Golden Jubilee with Deeper Meaning
Highlighting the broader significance of GOLDFEST, Mukesh Patel, Honorary Consul of Japan in Ahmedabad, said that the festival represents far more than a milestone celebration. According to him, GOLDFEST reflects five decades of trust, goodwill, and sustained people-to-people engagement between Gujarat and Japan. He emphasized that initiatives such as the Japanese kite exhibition, participation from Hamamatsu and Shizuoka, Indo–Japanese music collaborations with Yamaha Corporation, and immersive cultural experiences like O-Cha Utsav demonstrate how shared traditions and creativity can strengthen cross-cultural understanding and inspire future generations.

He added that the festival’s diverse programming—from Japanese kite-flying demonstrations during Uttarayan to music symposiums and green tea workshops—symbolises the depth and maturity of cultural collaboration that has evolved between the two regions over the years.
From Music to Youth Inspiration
Speaking about the creative vision behind GOLDFEST, Sundip Shah, Honorary Secretary of IJFA Gujarat, said that the festival draws inspiration from Hamamatsu, globally celebrated as the “City of Music” and the ancestral home of Yamaha. He explained that by blending Japanese precision with India’s vibrant artistic traditions, GOLDFEST aims to foster creativity, innovation, and curiosity—particularly among young minds—while deepening cultural bonds between Gujarat and Japan.
“Kem Chhe – Konnichiwa”: Culture, Music and Matcha
The theme “Kem Chhe – Konnichiwa” forms the cultural soul of GOLDFEST 2026 and brings together three signature experiences:
- Patang-O-Dori: A symbolic kite-flying celebration merging Japanese kite artistry with Ahmedabad’s iconic Uttarayan traditions.
- Sangeet Symphony (Nihon-no-Ongaku): Music workshops, symposiums, and an Indo–Japanese concert celebrating innovation through sound.
- O-Cha Utsav: A curated culinary journey into Shizuoka’s green tea and matcha heritage, promoting wellness and mindful living.
Discover the Joy of Music

On January 11, 2026, IJFA Gujarat, in collaboration with Yamaha Music India Pvt Ltd, conducted immersive workshops titled “Discover the Joy of Music.” Designed for students aged 10 to 15 years, the sessions introduced rhythm, sound, and creative exploration using authentic Yamaha instruments. Experts Yuji Otake and Risako Tokoro, along with mentors Pinaki Dey and Dipanjan Chatterjee, highlighted music’s role in cognitive development and creative problem-solving.
Music for Innovation & Creativity
A high-level symposium at AMA brought together musicians, educators, policymakers, and technologists from India and Japan. The discussion explored how music nurtures imagination, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking, reaffirming music’s role as a universal bridge between societies.
O-Cha Utsav: Shizuoka’s Tea Heritage
As part of the festivities, IJFA Gujarat and Shizuoka Prefecture hosted O-Cha Utsav at Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad. Participants experienced authentic Sencha and Matcha sourced directly from Shizuoka, guided by Hyatt’s culinary experts, highlighting both health benefits and cultural significance.
Grand Japanese Kite Flying on Uttarayan
The celebrations will culminate on January 14, 2026, with PATANG-O-DORI: “Dancing in the Sky with Amdavadi Patang!” at Shreyas Foundation, Ahmedabad. A Japanese delegation led by Yusuke Nakano, Mayor of Hamamatsu, along with expert kite flyers, will present traditional Japanese Tako kite-flying techniques, creating a spectacular fusion of Japanese and Gujarati aerial artistry.
A Festival of Friendship
GOLDFEST 2026 stands as a powerful symbol of cultural diplomacy, celebrating shared values, creativity, and people-to-people connections between Gujarat and Japan. As IJFA Gujarat marks its Golden Jubilee, the festival reaffirms its pioneering role in nurturing Indo–Japan relations over the past 50 years—and setting the course for an even stronger future.
Adding a vibrant artistic dimension to the occasion, pianist Megh Vora performed live piano compositions that set an elegant and reflective mood for the evening. Students confidently explained the visual slides on display, articulating the symbolism, philosophy, and deeper cultural essence of kite flying in Japan. The venue was illuminated with rich colours and a festive ambience. The gathering, which included senior office-bearers of the Indo-Japan Friendship Association, AMA and other distinguished dignitaries, provided the perfect setting to formally announce the festival details to the media on Saturday.
Felicitation and Recognition of Creative Contributors
During the media announcement, Mukesh Patel and Dr Mukund Patel felicitated and recognised the dedication and hard work of Nilesh Dave, whose creative vision shaped the visual identity of GOLDFEST 2026. Appreciation was also extended to the talented team comprising Rashmi Patel, Suresh Amrelia, Badal Singh, Rushikesh Goswami, as well as the committed teachers and students of Dehgam International School, and other contributors who collectively made the GOLDFEST exhibition and festival a beautiful and memorable event now unfolding across the city.
