A thought-provoking exhibition celebrating the life and contributions of veteran statesman and freedom fighter Rasiklal U. Parikh was inaugurated on Friday at the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), drawing scholars, civic leaders, historians, students and citizens keen to revisit a significant chapter of Gujarat’s political history.

Titled ‘A Visionary Statesman: The Public Life of Rasiklal U. Parikh’, the two-day exhibition coincides with Parikh’s 116th birth anniversary and offers a comprehensive exploration of his role in shaping governance, land reforms and institution-building in post-Independence Saurashtra and Gujarat.

The exhibition has been curated as a research-driven public history initiative by Raj Patel, an intern from the Institute of Design, Nirma University, as part of his graduation project. Developed with the support of members of the Parikh family and archival researchers, the project seeks to bring renewed public attention to a leader whose contributions have often remained underrepresented in mainstream historical narratives.

Among those present at the inauguration were Parikh’s grandchildren, Gauri Wagenaar and Anand Bariya, who attended the event with a deep sense of joy, pride and responsibility as they witnessed their grandfather’s legacy being shared with a new generation.

Speaking on the occasion, Gauri Wagenaar said, “For our family, this exhibition is both an emotional and meaningful milestone. It is heartening to see people engaging with my grandfather’s ideas, values and public service. We hope this initiative inspires younger generations to appreciate the challenges and vision involved in building institutions and shaping governance in the early years of independent India.”

Echoing the sentiment, Anand Bariya remarked, “This exhibition is not merely about remembering a historical figure; it is about understanding the principles of integrity, public service and nation-building that guided his life. We feel proud to see his work being documented and presented in such a thoughtful manner.”

Born on May 29, 1910, in Limbdi, Rasiklal U. Parikh was a freedom fighter, administrator and political leader who played a pivotal role in the formation and governance of Saurashtra and later Gujarat. He served as the Home Minister and subsequently the Chief Minister of Saurashtra State, before holding key portfolios including Revenue, Land, Home and Industry in both the Bombay and Gujarat governments. As a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, he contributed to nation-building while also participating actively in the freedom struggle, enduring imprisonment during the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement.

Widely respected for his efforts in implementing land reforms in Saurashtra, Parikh remained deeply connected to education, public institutions and democratic governance throughout his life.

Spread across five thematic sections, the exhibition traces Parikh’s journey from the freedom movement to the complexities of governance in newly independent India. Visitors can explore his involvement in the integration of princely states, the Junagadh annexation, the formation of the Aarzi Hukumat, the implementation of the Saurashtra Land Reform Act, and the challenges of building administrative institutions in a nascent democracy.

Moving beyond a conventional commemorative display, the exhibition presents a research-led and reading-oriented experience through carefully curated archival material, interpretive panels, historical documents and narratives. It invites visitors to reflect on the realities of governance, public service and institution-building during the formative decades of Saurashtra and Gujarat.

Addressing the gathering, Gauri Wagenaar noted, “The exhibition emerged from a long-standing desire to reclaim and preserve an important yet increasingly overlooked chapter of Gujarat’s political history. We envision this not merely as a memorial project but as a travelling public archive that will continue engaging audiences across Gujarat in the months ahead.”

Several distinguished guests and invited speakers at the inaugural ceremony shared personal recollections and reflections on Parikh’s leadership, work ethic and lasting contribution to public administration, underscoring the continued relevance of his vision in contemporary governance.

Both Gauri Wagenaar and Anand Bariya are the grandchildren of late Rasiklal U. Parikh.

The exhibition will remain open to visitors at AMA over the weekend, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the life and legacy of one of Gujarat’s most influential yet often overlooked statesmen.
