The Union Cabinet has approved a new pathway for the absorption of Agniveers into the regular ranks of the Defence Forces, following a positive assessment of their performance over the past four years.

Under the revised arrangement, 25% of Agniveers will continue to be offered regular employment in the Defence Forces on the basis of merit, as originally envisaged under the Agnipath Scheme.

The remaining 75% will be offered an additional engagement period of two years, subject to their willingness. Upon completion of this extended tenure, they will be eligible for enrolment as regular soldiers, provided they are willing and meet the prescribed selection criteria.

The decision follows detailed feedback and an assessment by the Defence Forces, which highlighted the Agniveers’ strong performance in skills, physical fitness, motivation, discipline and technological adaptability.

According to the government, the additional engagement period has been approved to balance the career aspirations of Agniveers with the operational and organisational requirements of the Defence Forces.

The second engagement period will also come with higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority-related benefits.

Achievements of the Agnipath Scheme

A review of the scheme’s four-year implementation highlighted several achievements, including:

  • Wider recruitment opportunities across districts of the country.
  • A more standardised and transparent recruitment process.
  • High levels of physical fitness, morale, motivation and discipline among Agniveers.
  • Improved skills, technological adaptability and educational development.
  • Increased opportunities for women across various branches of the Defence Forces.

The Cabinet has decided to continue the Agnipath Scheme, with the additional two-year engagement offering a further opportunity for Agniveers to pursue a long-term career in the military.

The revised framework aims to provide a pathway for all Agniveers to be considered for regular service, while retaining merit-based selection and the prescribed eligibility requirements.
