Ahmedbad, Oct 11: It’s human nature to wish and yearn for achievements. But do we always succeed in getting what we wish for? With hard labour and luck on our side, yes, we are able to realise our cherished dreams. This was proved by talented and bright Harimitha.

Harimita Patel, a fourth year MBBS student at Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS), is a table tennis champion. She has loved the sport since she was a kid. She was in class 5 when her father realized her love for the game and started encouraging her to play. Born to a Railways official and a homemaker mother, Harimita is lucky to receive love and support from both the parents and her younger sister.

Encouraged by her family, faculty and friends, she now plays at the state level and participates in inter-university tournaments. She has won the KSKV Kachchh University Inter- College Table Tennis (TT) tournament for two consecutive years. She was also selected for the West Zone Inter-University TT tournament.

She is not only good at sports but also excels in academics. Becoming a doctor was her another dream, which she fulfilled by working hard to secure a good rank in NEET. Sports and studies are equally important because sports help in a student’s growth and development, both psychological and physical. Agrees Harmita, “Besides physical fitness, TT has helped me attain focus, which in turn helps me in my studies. I have received encouragement from everyone, be it in my studies or sports.”

After completing MBBS, one-year internship and three years of residency, she aspires to become a pediatrician as it would give her a chance to work with kids. The Navsari resident chose to study at GAIMS because “the faculty is very good; the environment is safe and conducive to pursue medical studies and the facilities at the hospital are excellent”.

“GAIMS has always endeavored to inculcate the spirit of excellence in academics along with distinction in sports and co-curricular activities for all-round development to produce medicos who become knowledgeable, dedicated, and compassionate healthcare professionals. We are proud of Harimita as she has brought laurels to the institute,” says Dr A N Ghosh, Dean, GAIMS, who is also Professor in Department of Microbiology.

GAIMS is a self-financed medical college-cum-multi-specialty hospital established by the Government of Gujarat and Adani Foundation in Bhuj, Gujarat. GAIMS is affiliated to Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University. G. K. General Hospital (GKGH) is the attached teaching government hospital, which is the only multi-specialty teaching hospital in Kutch district. GKGH was completely destroyed in the 2001 earthquake. The government decided to rebuild the hospital. It entered into an agreement with the Adani Foundation to establish a medical college in the region and hand over the operations of the hospital.
